Time Management Issues and Commitment

Written by Charlie on December 23, 2006
When one first decides to get back on the health track, everything seems so positive and one feels so optimistic about being able to do it. The excitement is palpable, you make a plan and you intend to follow it to the dot. Yet as time goes by, other things crop up, other priorities get in the way. I am no exception to this, shall we say, phenomenon. I suppose it is part of life. At a certain point, you just seem unable to sort through the muddle of daily life. When I first visited my trainer weeks ago, I was brimming with enthusiasm. We decided on settling for at least twice a week of workout sessions. Now, barely a month later, I am struggling to balance all the things I need to do. My workload is such that I have to be up early and go back ...

Health Supplements – Introduction

Written by Charlie on December 17, 2006
Health, or dietary, supplements are not a new thing. However, with people’s eating habits now tending to focus on convenience and ease, dietary supplements are making a quick come back. The concern is that people are not able to take measures to ensure that what they eat supplies their daily nutritional needs. Hence the need for dietary supplements. Yet the question remains – are dietary supplements really necessary? The whole idea behind dietary supplements is that the act to ADD to our food’s nutritional value and not to replace food. As the name implies, they merely assist what we normally take in during meals. There are countless types of dietary supplements out there. Perhaps some of the most popular supplements these days are those that fall under the following groups: • Antioxidants – most known for anti-aging effects as well as cancer prevention • Anti-inflammatory agents ...

Check Your Eating Habits

Written by Charlie on December 15, 2006
Being healthy is not simply about exercising or working out. More than physical activity, we should also take a look into our eating habits. If you are like me, I tend to overdo it on one aspect and slack off in another. What I mean is, sometimes, I watch what I eat really conscientiously while not exercising at all. On the other hand, there are times when I engage in a lot of physical activity and yet do not watch what I eat – talk about imbalance. Yet what we are aiming for is an overall sense of well-being. That, of course, entails a balance in all aspects of health. So why not sit back for a moment and ponder on your eating habits. When my trainer asked me about this, I was a bit wary. I love food, I can’t deny that. I love to cook ...

Workout Routine – Cool Down

Written by Charlie on December 13, 2006
This is the last installment for our brief series on the workout routine. Just to recap, we talked about the warm up and the cardio. At the end of each session, the best practice would be to cool down. In between the warm up and cool down, there may be other exercises aside from cardio but we can look at them later on. So why do we need to cool down at the end of each workout session? First, a cool down helps our heart beat slow down and reach its normal pace gradually. The same thing goes with our breathing. More so, if we stop vigorous exercise abruptly, dizziness and fainting may occur due to the blood pooling at the legs. With a cool down, this is avoided. The cool down also gives time for our muscles to relax and for the tissues to repair themselves for ...

Workout Routine – Cardio

Written by Charlie on December 11, 2006

One of the elements of a good work out routine is to have cardiovascular exercises. Though this is a commonly known thing, not everyone has something specific in mind when they say cardio. What exactly is cardio and why do we need it?

At its simplest, cardio is any physical activity that aims to burn fat. There are different ideas on cardio routines. Some think that a low intensity workout is better while others prefer high intensity workouts. The idea behind the former workout is that you get your heart rate up to a certain level, THEN your body will start burning fat. On the average, it takes about 10 minutes to reach that level. The high intensity workout, on the other hand, gets you at the level almost at once. The problem with this is that it is ...

Workout Routine – Warming Up

Written by Charlie on December 9, 2006
If you ever have tried to work out at least once in your life, you would know the importance of a good warm up. People who dismiss warming up find out soon enough why warming up is essential prior to engaging in any physical activity. Watch an sport event and you will see the players stretching and doing other similar easy exercises before heading out into the field or court. Be in basketball, soccer, table tennis, badminton, or any other sport, warming up applies. So why is warm up that important? Different physical activities make use of different muscle groups. Our muscles, especially when they haven’t been in use for quite some time, are essentially “cold.” That is, they aren’t that flexible yet. When a person jumps right into strenuous physical exercise, the cold muscles are subjected to extreme stress. What happens is that there is ...

Rate Yourself

Written by Charlie on December 5, 2006
In this post, I’d like to share what we covered in my first session with my fitness trainer. This trainer of mine seems to have combined the best of both worlds by intertwining the mind and the body. We conducted a self-assessment the other day. First ask yourself about your eating habits. What foods do you eat most? Meat? Vegetables? How are they prepared? In what quantities do you eat them? What do you drink and in what quantities as well? Once you have laid out the details, you yourself will be able to assess if you have healthy eating habits. Whether we admit it or not, we know that there are certain foods that are good for us. The bottom line is not deprivation but a balance between the good and the not-so-good. Then evaluate your sleeping habits. What time do you go to sleep? More than ...

Reality Check – Healthwise

Written by Charlie on December 3, 2006
You have to admit, most of the Western world is experiencing a health crisis today. Despite all the hoop-lah on health and well-being, statistics show a sharp increase in health problems like obesity, cardiovascular issues, respiratory problems, and more. Even parts of the East are not exempt from such issues. Children today have more illnesses than children, say, of 30 years ago. What is the reason behind the evolving heath concerns? Now I am not a medical professional. I cannot even profess to be in the best of health. What I can tell you is that I am an individual who has realized the value of my personal health. For this reason, I have recently taken up with a professional wellness trainer. From our first session alone, I have come to realize so many things regarding my health and overall well-being. Instead of going straight to working out, ...
