Does Bottled Water Cause Cavities?

Written by Charlie on February 22, 2008
bottled water I don’t know if you have heard about this “rumor” but apparently, some people think that drinking bottled water can cause cavities. How true is this? To answer this question, we have to go back to the basics – drinking water. In the old days, drinking bottled water was not the norm. We just turned the tap on and drank the water. Today, some families are concerned about the safety of drinking tap water and as such, make use of bottled water as the main source of their drinking water. Now what is the difference between the two? Tap water comes straight from the water supply of the community. In some areas of the country, the natural water supply contains a certain amount of fluoride – enough to keep teeth healthy and free of cavities. In ...

Taking Care of Your Liver

Written by Charlie on February 16, 2008
no drinking Given that the liver can be prone to specific problems, there are ways by which you can avoid these problems. Here are some of those ways to keep your liver healthy. Drink in moderation Remember my friend? He has stopped drinking – not totally but he does not go out every night anymore and when he does drink, he stops at a couple of bottles of beer instead of the 6 to 10 that he used to drink at a time. Studies show that even just a drink or two can accumulate over the years and cause liver problems eventually. Drugs and alcohol don’t mix Yup, if you are under medication, stay away from alcohol. More so, do try to be adventurous and take pills with alcohol. The chances are that the only adventure you’ll end up with is at the ...

Your Liver and You: Possible Problems

Written by Charlie on February 16, 2008
drinker As I mentioned in the previous post, the liver is a very resilient organ. It can repair itself even if it has incurred a lot of damages. However, this resilient nature does not mean that it is immune to destruction. In fact, the liver is prone to specific diseases that can arise if it is not taken care of properly. Let’s take a look at some of the most common liver problems. Fatty liver No, I am not talking about the French delicacy foie gras, although that is also translated directly as fatty liver. Fatty liver disease in humans is due to too much alcohol consumption. What happens is that the liver swells with fat. If this fat further swells, it can cause alcohol hepatitis or cirrhosis. The former is reversible and can be dealt with ...

Your Liver and You

Written by Charlie on February 12, 2008
liver health Just yesterday, I received some news about a person very close to me. He had been having some health issues so he went to the doctor for some tests last week. The results of his blood chemistry came out yesterday and it seems that he has some problems with his liver. They are doing additional tests today to find out more about his condition. They are hoping, of course, that it is nothing serious but with his lifestyle (oh yes, he can drink most men under the table), I cannot help but be seriously concerned. This prompted some research on liver problems and thus this series of posts on the liver. So what is the liver’s role in keeping us healthy? Basically, it keeps our body clean. Everything that we ingest – food, drink, ...

Got The Munchies? Grab Some Greens!

Written by Charlie on February 9, 2008
salad I have always liked vegetables – that is something that our mother made sure of. Even as children, we would not feel that a meal is complete without some sort of vegetable to go with the meat. Now, as an adult, I still have this craving for at least a small portion of veggies when eating. With health being in the forefront of personal issues these days, it is not a surprise that you see people eating salads with their meals more often. Indeed, I have noticed that a lot of my colleagues at work eat salad every day. Well I suppose that the old idea of munching on green leafy food is boring is long gone. Today, you can discover a lot of ways to eat healthily and still have an interesting meal. Come to ...

Natural Supplements and Cancer

Written by Charlie on February 7, 2008
supplements Men who take natural supplements, this news is for you! Reuters just published an article on two men developing prostrate cancer after ingesting herbal supplements to boost their sexual performance. These men had been taking the supplements for months when they were diagnosed with advanced prostrate cancer. Here’s an excerpt of the article: Roehrborn’s team became concerned about what they call herbal/hormonal dietary supplements, or HHDSs, after two men developed aggressive and incurable prostate cancer within months of taking the same supplement. They analyzed the product, which they did not name for legal reasons, and found it contained two hormones — testosterone and estradiol. When they tested it on tumor cells in the lab, they found it fueled the growth of prostate cancer cells more potently than testosterone alone, they reported in the journal Clinical Cancer Research. Of course, we cannot generalize and ...

Some Exercise Can Keep The Common Cold Away

Written by Charlie on February 4, 2008
exercise colds What do you do when you get a cold? More so, what do you do to avoid getting a cold? I have heard about so many home remedies for and preventive actions against the common cold. Yet the common cold just seems to be just that – all too common. The usual way by which a lot of people try to fend off colds is to ingest large quantities of vitamin C. Now I am not saying that this does not work – I actually am a huge believer in this method. Research also shows that regular intake of this vitamin helps maintain one’s immune system. No conclusive evidence has been found to show that vitamin C does boost one’s immune system, though. So maybe I am not doing it right… Some research, however, has ...

Too Busy To Get Fit?

Written by Charlie on February 2, 2008
elliptical bike I was browsing some blogs when I ran across a post on how some people make excuses for not working out or at least trying to be healthy. I think the blog post struck something deep within me as I could not get it off my mind. So here I am, writing about the same topic, in an effort to answer the question for myself. Am I using my overbooked schedule to put off going to the gym, taking a walk, or riding my elliptical bike? I don’t know if I shared it with you but early this year, I bought one of those elliptical exercise machines because I thought that instead of going to the gym, I could just have some cardio here at home everyday. It is pretty convenient and for the first few weeks ...
