Dealing With Tachycardia

A healthy body and a sound mind
In the last post, we had an introductory look at what tachycardia is. Just to recap very briefly, tachycardia is a general term for conditions wherein the heartbeat of an individual exceeds 100 beats per minute. So what can cause tachycardia?
In their web site, the Mayo Clinic differentiates between people who have heart disease and those who do not. Just because a person has tachycardia does not necessarily mean that he has a heart disorder. This comes as a relief to me because while I am open to the possibility that I may have tachycardia, I really do not want to have any trouble with my heart (who does, anyway?).
Here is the list that I found at the Mayo Clinic’s site:
• An overactive thyroid or other metabolic imbalance
• Damage or microscopic abnormalities in the muscles of the atria (upper heart chambers)
• Abnormalities ...
The other night, I was alarmed to feel my heart pounding so hard. I was not stressed, I was not physically overexerted. In fact, I had just spent a couple of hours reading in bed and was feeling totally relaxed. That is why I was quite surprised when my heart just started pounding so hard that it seemed that I could feel my heartbeat all over my body!
This, of course, prompted me to look this symptom up on the Internet. I didn’t really feel any other “scary” symptom so I didn’t think to go to the doctor. Yet what I have found is faintly alarming. I might have tachycardia.
Tachycardia is defined as a condition wherein the heart rate is more than 100 beats per minute. That night, my heart was beating at about 130. ...
Maryland authorities are stepping up on efforts to address the issue of bullying – and not only in schools but in other venues as well. Are you aware that bullying occurs at the workplace as well? Based on the article published by the Washington Post:
There is evolving research indicating that bullying is a potentially lethal form of abuse that affects people of all ages. It happens not only in schools but also increasingly on the Internet and via cellphones, in neighborhoods and summer camps, between siblings, as hazing among young adults, and in the adult workplace. During the past two decades, bullying has been linked to hundreds of deaths worldwide, underscoring the need to address this urgent public health issue.
You and I both know that bullying has been around for as long as anyone can remember. Sometimes, we dismiss ...
Ask most any old married couple about memory loss and chances are that the women will tell you that this is true – the men tend to forget things more easily. That may not be very scientific but there is, in fact, scientific basis to this belief. Based on an article recently published on MSN Health, mild cognitive impairment in men is more likely to happen. The figures involve the ratio of one and a half.
Previous studies show the opposite however, Rosebud Roberts of the Mayo Clinic states:
These findings are in contrast to studies which have found more women than men [or an equal proportion] have dementia, and suggest there's a delayed progression to dementia in men. Alternately, women may develop dementia at a faster rate than men."
However, the new study shows the following results:
The study, expected to ...
We all suffer from the blues every now and then. This is a normal phase that we all go through. Just because you feel sad or depressed from time to time does not mean that you are clinically depressed and that you need to go see a psychologist or psychiatrist. In fact, when you are feeling a bit blue, you can do some things to make yourself feel better!
I think that we are all familiar with these methods - I am sure that you have your own “best cures” for the blues. Some people like to eat chocolate (or some other type of comfort food). I love ice cream! Other people go shopping. Still, other people would go on a trip.
Yet did you know that a short period of physical activity can help beat minor blues away? ...
If you are a smoker, you’ve probably heard this line so many times you cannot even begin to count it – smoking is bad, you’ll probably die of cancer at a young age. Maybe you’ve been told something along those lines, not exactly the same words. The idea is the same though – the general belief is that there is a direct correlation between smoking and lung cancer. And why not? After all, we all know that smoking is not good for the health. Then again, smokers know that it is not that easy to quit.
Now I am not advocating smoking here but here’s something to think about. There are people who are heavy smokers for most of their lives and yet live to a ripe age. Then again, there are people who maybe light or moderate smokers ...
How concerned are you when it comes to your health? Are you the type who pays the doctor a visit every time you feel something amiss? Or maybe you’re the type who only sees the doctor when you are really really ill? Whether you belong to the first group of the second group, it would not do you any harm to constantly include browsing health pages online.
There are countless web sites today which focus on health – how would you know which ones are worth visiting? Try looking at The Health Ranker, a relatively new site wherein you would find “all things health.” This site was actually brought to our attention by one of our readers (thanks Ishmael!).
So what can you find in this site? A whole lot of health ...
These are the words that I have been yearning to hear for the longest time now – keep on eating! If my doctor told me to keep on eating, I’d keep seeing that doctor forever. Context is everything though – these words are quite real and applicable, but to specific circumstances.
I ran across an article on iVillage, which details the findings of a new study:
You may no longer need to remember whether it's "starve a cold, feed a fever" or vice versa. New research suggests you should just eat.
A study of deer mice has found that reducing the amount of food the mice ate impaired their immune system. The findings are published in the May/June issue of Physiological and Biochemical Zoology.
The researchers found that decreasing the amount of food the mice ate by 30 percent significantly decreased the number of ...
Have you ever experienced trying to smile only to be cut short because your lips hurt? Well, I’ve been suffering from extremely chapped lips lately – why exactly, I don’t know. What I do know is that it is irritating and sometimes painful. I’ve tried everything from Chapstik to Nivea Lip Moisturizer seem to do the trick. I am currently using petroleum jelly but my lips go back to being chapped after a while. This led me to do some research on this matter – let me share them with you.
I think the tips from Mayo Clinic make a lot of sense:
• Use an oil-based lubricating cream, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment, or lip balm containing petrolatum or beeswax.
• Apply lip cream, balm or lipstick before going out in cold, dry weather. Reapply several times while outside.
• Choose a ...
