Some people may wake up in the morning and start sneezing, coughing or may sound drowsy. These unusual habits are often referred to as morning sicknesses, stemming from inherent traits or surroundings that may be polluted at times. This is why the cleanliness of surroundings has been given much premium since the after effects will surely turn out after some time and not immediately.

Morning sickness would usually be such reactions that would occur when a person would wake up after a good night’s sleep. This habit is considered to go on and on for years to come. While there is no clear explanation on how to cure such, they usually would last for an hour or two and would suddenly disappear as fast as it came.

For pregnant women, this is normal since their immune system is a whole lot delicate. Their morning sickness can go to as much as a day in the process of their current state of pregnancy.

Of all the allergies, asthma is perhaps the most common and most inconvenient. It comes in many forms and treatments vary for each type. As such, it is important that you know exactly what kind of asthma you have before you undergo any kind of treatment. Of course, the wisest course would be to consult your doctor. Yet here are some things that you can consider even before you pay your doctor a visit. This information will also be helpful in determining exactly what kind of asthma you have.

In the broadest sense, asthma can be classified into either intermittent asthma or persistent asthma. Other more specific categories would be allergic asthma (caused by external stimuli), intrinsic asthma (not due to allergies), exercise-induced asthma, occupational asthma (triggered at work), and cough-variant asthma (persistent cough). Knowing what triggers your asthma attacks will help greatly in determining your type of asthma. From there, you can work on how to treat and prevent attacks.

Though asthma has been classified into different categories, determining what kind of asthma you have is far from simple. In order to avoid any kind of attack, here are some general tips that can help. Avoid extreme changes in temperature. Furthermore, ensure that your house is clean and free of dust and other possible allergens. As it is January and you probably spend a lot of time indoors, do keep the atmosphere inside as health friendly possible. Use humidifiers if you need to. Make sure there is enough fresh air coming in and have adequate ventilation.

Aloe has long been touted as one of Nature’s best for treating different kinds of conditions. From making hair thicker and more beautiful to cleansing our bodies, Aloe’s effects have been testified to by many people. For the benefit of those who are not very familiar with Aloe, it is a green plant with spiky leaves.

Different parts of the plant have different uses. When used for medicinal or health purposes, Aloe comes in different forms. The most common forms of Aloe is the gel (obtained from stripping away the outer covering), the juice (consists of pulped juice), and the bitter principle (bitter yellow liquid from the rind).

Perhaps one of the main uses of Aloe is to deal with digestive problems. It is said to help treat colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. Most of the time, Aloe juice is used for these problems. The juice is also used to treat ulcers. More so, studies have shown that Aloe juice, when taken orally has a good effect on asthma sufferers as long as they are not taking any corticosteroids. For external use, the gel can be used to soothe burns, wounds, allergies, sunburn, psoriasis, acne, and inflammation.

You can grow Aloe right in your backyard and make use of the gel immediately. For the juice and bitter principle, you may find it easier to visit your local health store. You should also consult your doctor to determine if there is no conflict with other treatments that you may be undergoing.

January is one of the most looked forward to months, perhaps simply because it is the start of the year. Yet it has some repercussions on our health. January is a time when it can be quite cold, forcing many people in temperate countries to spend much more time indoors than outdoors. Contrary to popular belief, staying indoors may be more harmful to your health than going out. This is because the air indoors may actually be more polluted than what is out there.

How can this happen? In the winter, houses need to be warm and insulated. Windows are most often closed to keep the cold out and the heat in. As a result, there is usually poor ventilation within. The air is not naturally replenished inside. Molds can be a complication as well due to the dampness in the air. To make matters worse, if there is a smoker in the family and he smokes within the house, the air is definitely more polluted.

As such, you should not take the matter of indoor health care lightly. At this time of the year when many people spend a lot of time inside the house, you should take care to ensure that the conditions inside the house contribute to your health and not the contrary. First thing you must consider are activities that pollute the air. Smoking was already mentioned. Avoid smoking within enclosed premises.

Using air fresheners and deodorizers may seem like a good idea but if not used properly, you may contribute to adding allergens inside the house. If you do need to use such products, make sure that there is at least a short period of time wherein you can get fresh air inside.

As if having asthmatic attacks was not difficult enough, a new study shows that people with asthma have increased risk for suicidal thoughts and attempts. Research done at the Johns Hokpins University School of Public Health examined more than 5,000 people:

They found that about 12 percent had a history of asthma. Estimates of lifetime prevalence for suicidal thoughts and attempts without and with asthma were 8.7 percent, 4.2 percent and 12 percent, respectively, and occurred more frequently in women than in men.

Cigarette smoking and concurrent mental health conditions may independently account for a large part, but not all, of the association between asthma and suicidal thoughts with attempts, said the study authors.

After they adjusted for cigarette smoking, concurrent mental health conditions and common sociodemographic factors, they found there was still a significant association between asthma and suicide thoughts and attempts.

I have not really made any connection about asthma and suicidal thoughts, much less attempts and this study has opened a new way of seeing things for me. Does this mean that we have to pay particular to our friends and family members who have asthma? This runs in our family but I hope that the suicidal will not be manifested.

How about you? The chances are that you have people around you who have asthma. Do you think that we should pay closer attention to their mental health as well?

Have you ever experienced trying to smile only to be cut short because your lips hurt? Well, I’ve been suffering from extremely chapped lips lately – why exactly, I don’t know. What I do know is that it is irritating and sometimes painful. I’ve tried everything from Chapstik to Nivea Lip Moisturizer seem to do the trick. I am currently using petroleum jelly but my lips go back to being chapped after a while. This led me to do some research on this matter – let me share them with you.

I think the tips from Mayo Clinic make a lot of sense:

•	Use an oil-based lubricating cream, such as Aquaphor Healing Ointment, or lip balm containing petrolatum or beeswax.
•	Apply lip cream, balm or lipstick before going out in cold, dry weather. Reapply several times while outside.
•	Choose a lip cream or balm that contains sunscreen. Sun exposure contributes to chapped lips.
•	Avoid licking your lips. Saliva evaporates quickly, leaving lips drier than before you licked them.
•	Avoid using a flavored lip balm, which can tempt you to lick your lips.
•	Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Dehydration can contribute to chapped lips.
•	Use a humidifier at home to keep air moist.

Aha! Flavored lip balm! I suppose I should try one that is not flavored. Or maybe, a product that contains beeswax would be better. I also found out that Burt’s Bees seem to work well for a lot people. Another option would be Neutrogena – they’ve always had effective products. I think I shall head on out to the drugstore tomorrow to check what they have – I’ll update you on this. If you have any recommendations, do share them with me, please.

Anyone in the world today would be prone to acne formation usually in their face owing to the fact that the skin moisture plays a pivotal role in their sudden formation. Pollution around the world today are another factor, hence the need for proper hygiene of the body like occasionally washing of the face is a necessity in this time and age.

Pimples can also occur depending on the hereditary traits that a person would have. Some would simply pop up at any moment and this is something that has become typical for teenagers, a sign of change in their current state. Many believe that the sight of pimples is a sign of being in love, but then again, it all boils down to how sensitive a person is about his or her skin.

It is best to be aware of the level of moisture and the contraction of smoke and dust to the face. Many would use wet towels and tissues to wipe off the harmful triggers of pimples. For people who are not that inclined to pay attention to them, expect the formation of such acne and pimples either to grow or spread to various areas, most of it on the facial area of individuals.

For a person that pushes himself hard to be able to do all the things that need to be done, it will always come to a point where he would be looking for rest and naps to be able to temporarily recharge his energy. Some people grab any opportunity, even short naps to revitalize their tired bodies. One thing noticeable is that even in short naps, a person would tend to snore, something that would be irritating to people who would be around at that time.

Snoring is natural for people who are really tired. Snoring may be irritating, but it is also a bad sign since it means some disorders for the human body, particularly the cardiology parts of the human body. Heart problems and abuse of health has been found to contribute to snoring, meaning that at some point, people may need to consult their physicians and most probably need to have check-ups to get an overall assessment of their health status.

Snoring may not be immediately noticed by people since they are most of the time unaware of it. People around them would be the ones to hear it, and once they do and inform them about it, it would be best to take note and be more cautious.

If there is one epidemic that has been added to the list of diseases that can cause havoc towards the lives of people, the Bird Flu is perhaps something that will create a panic. Ever since it was discovered and found to be dangerous some time in 2003. As the name connotes, this virus came from China, stemming from the poultry business and has brought the epidemic towards classifying flu as a possible starting point.

To date, the diagnosis of coughs and colds has led physicians to go as far as treating the usual symptom more appropriately and ruling out the presence of Bird flu. Bird flu can go as far as providing high fever temperatures which may lead to untimely death if people are not careful. Vaccines and medical drugs such as Amantadines and Neuraminidase inhibitors, have been offered in such cases. For sure, there will be additional medicines and anti-biotics to widen the possible remedies to such a disease dreaded today.

Eight out of ten thyroid patients are actually women. But there is also an alarming number of men affected with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. If we base this on figures and not percentages, of 15 million afflicted with thyroidism, 3 million or so come from the men.

It is not certain why many thyroid conditions happen in women than in men. Medical practitioners believe that the hormonal changes womens body go through during puberty, pregnancy and throughout menopause, may be the result of these. In other words, a woman may genetically inherit this predisposition.

Of thyroid cancer cases, about a miniscule percentage is composed of men. Yet if there is a presence of a nodule in the glands, this problem may be a lot more harmful to men than women. Nodules in men are the single components that lead to mens thyroid cancer. They mutate and form into lumps that lead to swelling.
