Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer – Top 10 Tips

Written by Charlie on September 13, 2010
Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. These contain antioxidants that reduce your cancer risk. Consuming fewer animal fats will reduce your exposure to organic pollutants and saturated fats. Reduce the number of man-made perfumes or deodorants you apply to your body. They all contain chemicals in small amounts but regular heavy use can lead to the accumulation of these chemicals in the body. Get your tap water independently checked to see what kind of chemicals are in your drinking water. Use some kind of filter system for your drinking water to remove the trace chemicals from your water left behind by the treatment process. Don't smoke tobacco. Studies by the California Air Resources Board concluded that younger, pre-menopausal women exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of breast cancer. Drink alcohol in moderation, excess consumption affects your liver and can cause depression. Wine is probably the healthiest option ...

How to Avoid Sprains from Becoming Inflammations

Written by Charlie on August 27, 2010
For people who are into sports like badminton, basketball, football and soccer, encountering injuries such as that of ankle sprains is only normal. Such would be expected once a person would fall on the wrong stance when they go in lateral motions or on jumping instances. Landing on the wrong foot will always be a problem since the balance of a body is tilted, hence putting the full weight on one foot causing trauma on the muscle tissues of the affected foot.
Causes of Ankle Sprains
In such cases, the immediate action should be not to loosen the shoes so that swelling will not readily occur. Assuming that the person would already be resting, immediate application of ice towards the affected portion of the swelling must be done to avoid it from bloating. This is to control the inflamed part since further heat will only make ...

My Back Hurts, Does Yours Too?

Written by Charlie on July 22, 2010
If you are like me, living a sedentary life, you probably feel more than your share of back pain. Though a large number of people experience back pain of some sort at some point in their lives, the exact causes of back pain have not been pinpointed. There are many factors that can cause back pain, especially for cases wherein there has been physical injury. Yet a majority of the recurrent back pain cases cannot be attributed to a single factor. If you think about the back being the workhorse of the body - it being the main support of the torso - it is but logical that this part of the body will feel stressed out most of the time. Add to this the fact that more and more people are starting to live ...

Carb Cycling

Written by Charlie on July 15, 2010
We've all heard about diets which target the carbohydrate intake of people. Some say they're dangerous. Some say they're useless. Others say they work. You'll never know until you try it for yourself. However, the fact remains that diets like this are akin to starving yourself. Basically, no carb diets disallow the intake of some of the most common foods we eat everyday - pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, and similar foods. Recently, I came across a new idea (at least it's new to me) - carb cycling. So what is this thing all about? Basically, you do not starve yourself. You have days when you eat normally (with regards to carbs) and there are days when you limit your carb intake. Take note, the word I used was limit and not prohibit. So on the days that you are not limiting carbs, the suggested intake is about 300 ...

Weight Loss And Psychotherapy For Teenage Weight Loss

Written by Charlie on January 15, 2010
42-20056766Losing weight is an ever popular topic, isn’t it? One thing I have noticed lately, though, is that weight issues are being faced by the younger generation more and more. Perhaps at their impressionable age, the weight issues they face are even more critical. Just last month, during the holiday break, I noticed that my younger cousins – aged from 16 to 20 – were all dealing with weight issues. And when I read a feature article on MSN about teenagers and weight loss, my interest was really aroused. Basically, the article says that a psychotherapy program may work better to help teenagers deal with weight issues and avoid obesity. This is in comparison with traditional health classes. I agree with the idea of the program mentioned, which “focuses on improving interpersonal ...

Have A Healthy And Safe Christmas

Written by Charlie on December 21, 2009
christmas-party1Last weekend was crazy for me. Ever since the beginning of December, I haven’t had a decent weekend of rest. I suppose it is the same for everyone who celebrates Christmas. Parties are being held left and right practically every day. The weekends are the worst, when you might even have to go from one party to another just to accommodate your friends and family members. While I am not complaining – it has been the most fun period of this year – I do realize how potentially hazardous all this can be to my health; and you should realize this as well! With less than 2 weeks left before the end of the year, I am sure that you still have a lot of activities and events to engage in – do take a look ...

Bad Times Equals Good Health

Written by Charlie on September 30, 2009
home-cooking-365-703552They say that without hard times, we cannot become better people. If you think about it, there are a lot of sayings from way back that run along a similar vein. No pain, no gain. You have to go through the fire to reap the benefits. You have to be polished and sanded to become a shiny gem. The list could go on and on. But what about the economic crisis that we have been experiencing all over the world? Could it bring about something good as well? According to researchers, life expectancy increased during the time of the Great Depression – by 1.9 years to be exact. On the other hand, a 5 percent rise in the GDP lowered life expectancy by one or two months. Other studies have yielded similar ...

Heads that Ache…….. Really!

Written by Charlie on February 4, 2009
headacheEveryday, millions of people suffer from the dreaded headache sending you to grab that pill you oh so love to take away the pain. The fast paced lifestyle we all engage in doesn't help and the stresses of the day just keep piling up leaving us weak and fatigued. Readily available OTC drugs may offer relief but that may not be the best solution for the dreaded headache. Your lifestyle may be the primary cause adding the stress you go through each and everyday, might be the culprit. Men are less likely to suffer from chronic pain due to extreme activities than men due to the hormone testosterone which has been shown to help lessen the damage to muscles and tissue, thus leaving women to suffer more. Statistically, women suffer an average of 15 episodes that can ...

Gear Yourself Up For The Holiday Binge – Weight Loss Tips

Written by Charlie on December 3, 2008
Woman in sportschool
I have to admit defeat…during the holidays, despite my best intentions when it comes to weight loss and weight maintenance, even my strongest efforts shatter into pieces right before my very eyes. The moment I lay my eyes on the buffet table, my resolve just seems to disappear. I have to say that I have found other ways to deal with the whole thing. If I can’t totally abstain from enjoying the holiday feasts, then I will just put extra effort into exercising BEFORE the holidays. MSN has a really good article for people like me (and you, probably!). Check out this computation of calories: Consider a typical winter-time week: Let's say you eat an extra 1,500 calories on the ...
