Some people may wake up in the morning and start sneezing, coughing or may sound drowsy. These unusual habits are often referred to as morning sicknesses, stemming from inherent traits or surroundings that may be polluted at times. This is why the cleanliness of surroundings has been given much premium since the after effects will surely turn out after some time and not immediately.

Morning sickness would usually be such reactions that would occur when a person would wake up after a good night’s sleep. This habit is considered to go on and on for years to come. While there is no clear explanation on how to cure such, they usually would last for an hour or two and would suddenly disappear as fast as it came.

For pregnant women, this is normal since their immune system is a whole lot delicate. Their morning sickness can go to as much as a day in the process of their current state of pregnancy.

Put aside the fears of allergies and other downsides, they’re just plain good for your inner peace. They know when your down and show when they’re happy cheering you up in ways you can only imagine. Dogs have been known to express their loyalty in many ways, from saving lives to plain simple love they show and express with their emotions.

Pets, especially dogs or “Man’s Best Friend”, have evolved into a species that cannot survive well without us, repaying us with unfaltering love and affection when we need it most. Medical studies have shown that children who have pets as well as their parents have better emotional health. Dog reflections, from dog lovers the world over shows just how much they can enrich our lives in many ways. They feel our hurts and joys, often lending a silent ear when we need it coupled with utmost loyalty enough to defend us when needed, we may never know what they might say or think but you know they do.

This slogan became very popular all over the world many years ago but today, it might not be a good idea to stock up on milk – especially if it comes from China. I am sure that you have heard of the powdered milk scare. Last week, reports came out that powdered milk from China has been contaminated with melamine.

Melamine is a chemical that is usually used for coatings, laminates, adhesives, and other industrial applications. Apparently, some Chinese manufacturers have added this chemical to their dairy products. The reason behind this is that it makes the products seem to have higher protein levels. So how can melamine hurt you?

According to experts, melamine can cause various illnesses like kidney stones, stomach ulcers, and irritation of the skin and eyes. Naturally, infants drinking milk tainted with the chemical can suffer from lack of nutrition. More so, this chemical is responsible for killing cats and dogs during the big industrial contamination in the United States last year.

How is China reacting to this scandal? CNN reports:

On Monday, China’s top quality control official, Li Changjiang, resigned as a result of the scandal, which has seen the arrest of at least 18 people.

Two brothers arrested last week on charges of selling contaminated milk could face death if convicted, according to China Daily, a state-run newspaper. The raw milk used to produce powdered baby formula had been watered down and the chemical melamine was added to fool quality checks, the newspaper said.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Beijing hospitals and a supermarket to show his concern. China’s Health Ministry said about 13,000 children were hospitalized, while another 40,000 had undergone outpatient treatment.

“What we need to do now is to ensure that nothing like this happens in the future, not only in dairy products, but in all foods,” he said. “Manufacturers and owners of dairy companies should show more morality and social responsibility in these cases. They are heartless, so we have to create strict law and legislation. I’m sorry.”

As for us, we should stay clear of milk and other products that may possibly come from China.

Every adult I know has a certain fear of kidney stones. After all, we know that they could hurt – really badly. When we talk about kidney stones, however, our perceptions are normally limited to adults. This kind of thinking is being questioned by Dr. Caleb Nelson, a urologist at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. According to him, “There is very little available on pediatric stone disease in particular. Most data has looked at adults or the entire population.”

However, the absence of hard data does not mean that there are no incidences of kidney stones in children. In fact, Dr. Nelson, together with other experts, is certain that there are many children with the condition. They attribute this to various causes such as “sedentary lifestyle, obesity increase, processed high-salt diets. Some children get the stones, because birth defects in the urinary tract put them at risk for urinary obstruction. Another subset of children is premature infants who form stones related to the medications they require.”

What does this mean for the average person? If you have children, then you might want to take a closer look at their risk for kidney stones. Though experts say that there is not much that parents can do specifically to ensure that their kids do not get kidney stones, a great deal can be done by making sure that children have a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet. And just like with adults, a healthy intake of non-caffeinated fluids can help.

When I was a kid, it was a different story. Measles and chicken pox were quite common and every baby that was born had to have shots (at least for measles) in order to avoid contracting the disease. I thought for sure that the problem had been eradicated.

That is, until I read on MSN that we are having measles cases all over the country again. In fact, the report says that the current count for measles cases is the highest since 1996!

Some parents’ refusal to vaccinate children seems to be behind the highest rate of measles cases reported since 1996, federal officials said Thursday.

Between Jan. 1 and July 31 of this year, 131 measles cases have been reported in the United States, many of them among children whose parents have philosophical or religious objections to the vaccine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least 15 patients, including four children 15 months or younger, were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

There you go – parents are refusing to vaccinate their children and that is causing the occurrence of measles! I am quite confused about this point. Why would parents refuse vaccination? I mean, I would understand if we were living in the early 20th century – religious beliefs and superstitions, you know. But in this day and age?

Anyhow, if you have children or you are having a baby soon, do make sure to check with your doctor about vaccinations. Better safe than sorry!

Maryland authorities are stepping up on efforts to address the issue of bullying – and not only in schools but in other venues as well. Are you aware that bullying occurs at the workplace as well? Based on the article published by the Washington Post:

There is evolving research indicating that bullying is a potentially lethal form of abuse that affects people of all ages. It happens not only in schools but also increasingly on the Internet and via cellphones, in neighborhoods and summer camps, between siblings, as hazing among young adults, and in the adult workplace. During the past two decades, bullying has been linked to hundreds of deaths worldwide, underscoring the need to address this urgent public health issue.

You and I both know that bullying has been around for as long as anyone can remember. Sometimes, we dismiss it as superficial – children will be children, boys will be boys (even if they are already full grown men!), and so on. What we may not have realized is that bullying has a potential to physically, emotionally, and psychologically harm both parties – the bully and the victim!

Think about your own work situation. Is there an office bully who likes to pick on the people around him? The chances are that there is at least one. I can think of one or two people in my workplace who are like that. Is there anything being done about it?

Nope. Unless it significantly hinders productivity and something really big happens, I don’t think that any action will be taken. Shall we wait till that happens, though?

I don’t know if you have heard about this “rumor” but apparently, some people think that drinking bottled water can cause cavities. How true is this? To answer this question, we have to go back to the basics – drinking water.

In the old days, drinking bottled water was not the norm. We just turned the tap on and drank the water. Today, some families are concerned about the safety of drinking tap water and as such, make use of bottled water as the main source of their drinking water. Now what is the difference between the two?

Tap water comes straight from the water supply of the community. In some areas of the country, the natural water supply contains a certain amount of fluoride – enough to keep teeth healthy and free of cavities. In other areas, however, there is not enough fluoride in the natural water supply. As such, fluoride is added to the water supply of communities. In this way, children and adults alike get enough fluoride to maintain healthy teeth. Add to this the fluoride that people get from toothpaste and cavities are not normally a problem.

When it comes to bottled water, however, there is usually not enough fluoride present. What happens is that during the processing of the water, the fluoride may be removed from the water. This could be the reason that children develop cavities – the lack of fluoride. This should not be such a huge source of concern, however, if bottled water is not the main source of drinking water.

Digestive disorders that would come normal would include that of consuming something that the stomach would not like. In other cases, it would include food intake of something that may have been already spoiled thus leading towards discharge of wastes and toxins that may become uncontrollable.

Loose Bowel Movement (LBM) is a natural occurrence where much of the body minerals would be affected as well. Changes in the bowel movement are sure to occur in bad digestive instances. Experiencing stomach cramps, slight chills and the usual uncomfortable feelings are among the things to watch out for in such cases.

The best way is to continuously drink water as a form of therapy since LBM drains the body of its liquids at times. Gatorade has been known to be a good alternative to drink up because of its amino acids that would ensure that the body would still have the necessary proteins and to avoid dehydration.

People are not always aware of their current state of physical condition by simply looking at the mirror or relying on what they feel at present. The need to undergo certain medical examinations and physicians advice are the best ways to go about the overall assessment of a persons current health status.

The common belief for some is that unless they feel something strange, they would not go to their physician for medical evaluation. With the trend today leaning more towards being health conscious, regular physical examinations are slowly becoming a regular practice to safeguard their overall hiatus.

Diseases and illnesses have slowly been spreading and resorting to the possible immunizations brought about by advanced medicine is a good way to avoid illnesses that can make a persons life dreadful. Physical examinations can be availed of even for just once a year and practicing this from a 365 day period in a year does not really take up much of a persons time.

People who would normally spend most of their time in front of computers and not getting enough sleep to recharge their body are bound to reach a point where their 20/20 vision may get affected. Growing eye bags and twitching muscles behind the human eye are indicators of abused use of the sense of sight, also warning beforehand a person that he should also learn to rest his eyes from time to time.

While people cannot help such need to embark on body abuses relating to work and pressure stemming from their duties, it is best to adjust the whole body clock to adapt to change temporarily. Everyone will come to a point where they would have to slow down and realize that bodily abuse will catch up with them.

Vitamins and supplements may help in providing preventive maintenance, but this alone cannot help cure such illnesses. It will also need the cooperation of a person for it to work, otherwise, it is just like burning money for nothing at all.
