Studies have shown that pregnant women and new mothers that have diabetes are in far greater risk for developing post partum depression (PPD). Though the reason for the higher risk is not yet exactly known what is known is that out of 11,000 women who were enrolled in New Jersey’s Medicaid program 15.2 percent of those that had diabetes became depressed during pregnancy or up to a year after birth. The percentage of diabetic women who did not suffer from postpartum depression is significantly lower at only 8.5 percent.

What this means for expectant mothers is that if routine diabetes tests give you a positive result you should also discuss with your doctor the possibility of post partum depression and ways to prevent and manage problem. This is very important because post partum depression IS treatable. Since the disorder is underdiagnosed, by being aware and discussing with your doctor the risk factors involved, in case you end up suffering from PPD chances of it going undetected will be minimized, which in turn means fast help for you.

The link between diabetes and depression has already been studied before but it is only now that the figures for diabetes and PPD have come out.

Some people may wake up in the morning and start sneezing, coughing or may sound drowsy. These unusual habits are often referred to as morning sicknesses, stemming from inherent traits or surroundings that may be polluted at times. This is why the cleanliness of surroundings has been given much premium since the after effects will surely turn out after some time and not immediately.

Morning sickness would usually be such reactions that would occur when a person would wake up after a good night’s sleep. This habit is considered to go on and on for years to come. While there is no clear explanation on how to cure such, they usually would last for an hour or two and would suddenly disappear as fast as it came.

For pregnant women, this is normal since their immune system is a whole lot delicate. Their morning sickness can go to as much as a day in the process of their current state of pregnancy.

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that has been rampant for people who have had a hard time reverting back to the normal body clocks. Insomnia has so far altered the body clock, resulting into problems that people who report for work on a regular 8 to 5 shift due to absences and tardiness.

While there are people who seek medical attention, it all boils down on how the person would be determined in finding out how to regulate their sleeping habits once more. There will always be Valium to help people sleep at preferred times but the normal recourse would be to try and re-adjust the body clock.

Physicians who would stay away from prescribing medical drugs, would advise patients to drink warm milk and even drink vitamins before they sleep. While the latter would be up for questioning, the explanation behind it is simply filling in the lost nutrients that a body would normally have and thus make people more comfortable and relaxed, thus pointing towards sleeping for a complete body rest at the right time when a person should be taking his long deserved sleeping habit.

People would encounter times when they would suddenly feel uneasy, experience sudden attacks of fever or even feel weak without explanation. Initially, people would consider it a mild attack of possible diseases such as fever or flu. But in some cases, they would not react to the standard paracetamols or aspirins making people wonder what could possibly be wrong.

One good way to see is to check the urine of people. Difference in color such as hazy or turbid may be an indication of Urinary Tract Infection. UTI can be confirmed through proper Urinalysis examinations from laboratory examinations. UTI is usually developed when a person would try to hold the usual discharge or from consuming certain liquids that are not pure water.

The best therapy is through drinking water regularly. Water cleanses the system and forces the body to discharge body fluids through urinary discharges. UTI may not be serious at first, but taking it for granted may lead to severe cases and treatment in the long run.

Smoking is one thing that people have a hard time kicking. A lot of smokers would love to find out how to kick the habit, something that is hard to avoid once it is started. There have been offered alternatives like chewing gum, candies, or placing the mind into something else. While some may have resorted to such, the rate of smokers existing in the world today is still overpowering and growing as each day passes.

Smoking is a known vice where people simply take satisfaction in blowing of some inhaled fumes of tobacco. These fumes are acclaimed to be able to relax the tense body and mind but there has been no actual medical proof that smoking does actually relax the pressured person today. Many would say that is psychological in nature but overall, many have been drawn more towards believing that it indeed does soothe the battered mind today.

Headaches are only normal for people to encounter. This especially holds true when people are put under a lot of pressure, stressed out and lack the necessary hours of sleep to recharge their body and mind. Abuse of the body’s health is only normal as this is something that most people would usually do when they are always on the go or have to perform the duties necessary for them to uphold their career and lifestyle.

But while an aspirin may relieve some people of headaches, recurring instances should not be taken lightly. Headaches are associated with other things such as peripheral vision, heart conditions, and neurological issues which may be a cause for alarm.

The best way is to see a physician and determine the cause of headaches and rule out any serious illness, like aneurysm as mentioned above. Headaches may not be given the due attention but it would be best to rule out other complications for something that may not be immediately cured by pain relievers and aspirin.

Eight out of ten thyroid patients are actually women. But there is also an alarming number of men affected with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. If we base this on figures and not percentages, of 15 million afflicted with thyroidism, 3 million or so come from the men.

It is not certain why many thyroid conditions happen in women than in men. Medical practitioners believe that the hormonal changes women’s body go through during puberty, pregnancy and throughout menopause, may be the result of these. In other words, a woman may genetically inherit this predisposition.

Of thyroid cancer cases, about a miniscule percentage is composed of men. Yet if there is a presence of a nodule in the glands, this problem may be a lot more harmful to men than women. Nodules in men are the single components that lead to men’s thyroid cancer. They mutate and form into lumps that lead to swelling.

We all know that this is a big no no. One thing that coffee drinkers find really frustrating about carrying another life inside of them is the fact that one of their lifelines – coffee – is being denied to them. Yet there seems to be hope for us!

A recent study conducted in Denmark showed that it is in fact, quite all right for women to continue having their daily coffee intake during pregnancy. According to Bodil Hammer Bech, Ph.D., of the Institute of Public Health at the University of Aarhus, three cups of coffee a day didn’t have any effects on the baby. The same study showed, however, that women who smoked and drank coffee during their pregnancy had the increased risk of having smaller babies. An important thing to note about the study is that it was conducted during the second half of pregnancy. That means that if coffee has negative effects during the first half of pregnancy, it is not known.

So what are the implications for coffee lovers who are pregnant or are planning to get pregnant soon? I would say try to steer clear of coffee. I mean, I cannot survive without coffee, to be honest. Yet when and if I become pregnant, I do not think I can risk my baby just because I need my daily dose of caffeine. Well maybe by then they will have more conclusive results – who knows? Till then, temperance is discipline would have to reign supreme.
