Written by Teresa Te on August 25, 2012
People need vitamins to supplement their daily nutrition. This is ideal notably for those who are experiencing certain illnesses that have caused deficiencies in some nutrients in their body. Depending on your health requirements, there are practically numerous vitamins available on the market today. Those that contain the popular plant Stevia or the sweet chemicals called steviol glycosides is just one of them. Stevia is a well known sweetener that does not contain carbohydrates. It's considered to be a healthy alternative to sugar and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a sugar substitute. It's quite common these days for health drinks, juices, flavored drinks and even soft drinks to contain this ingredient. Being free from calories and sweeter than sugar, drink manufacturers have turned to the stevia to sweeten their products without risking ...

Research Points to Certain Vitamins for Decreased Lifespans

Written by Hannah on February 28, 2012
Vitamins are always good for you, right? Not always! According to a review of 67 studies done by scientists at the Copenhagen University, called the Cochrane Collaboration, certain vitamins, specifically beta-carotene and Vitamins A and E, may shorten your life. In fact, BBC reports that "the researchers linked vitamin A supplements to a 16% increased risk of dying, beta-carotene to a 7% increased risk and vitamin E to a 4% increased risk." This does not mean, however, that you should stop taking your vitamin supplements altogether. However, as the researchers themselves warn, you should "exercise caution in the use of high doses of purified supplements of vitamins, including antioxidant vitamins, and minerals." Instead of relying on vitamin supplements alone to provide the anti-oxidants and minerals you need, it is still best to eat a balanced and healthy diet rich in natural vitamins ...

Written by Charlie on September 17, 2010
We've heard of dietary supplements, which is really an umbrella term for more specific kinds of supplements. Perhaps one of the most common - and widely accepted - supplements are vitamin and mineral supplements. Even as children, our pediatricians would recommend these. Of course, with time and age, the nature of vitamin and mineral supplements has changed. Vitamin and mineral supplements are a way to make up for possible deficiencies in our diets. That means whether or not you are trying to lose weight, you may need vitamin and mineral supplements - that is if you want to be healthy. So what vitamin and mineral supplements should we take? It really depends on what you need. I tried doing a little research and ended up overwhelmed with the available supplements in the market. My local pharmacy was not much help either. However, in my research, I came across ...

Calcium Supplements

Written by Charlie on August 13, 2010
I distinctly remember my mom telling me to drink my daily rations of milk - one glass in the morning and another at night. I also remember loving it and my sister quite the opposite - she would surreptitiously pour her milk into the sink or water the plants with it! I guess I should thank my mother for making us drink a lot of milk during those formative years. Why? Because of its calcium content. Today, calcium deficiency is one of the main concerns for women in their 30s or even early 20s. The great fear is that when we reach our 50s or 60s, osteoporosis would set in. That is why you can see a plethora of advertisements regarding calcium and different products supposedly containing adequate amounts of this mineral. Because calcium is not that easy to acquire from the natural food that we eat ...

Vitamin C and Smoking

Written by Charlie on June 18, 2010
One of the most commonly known vitamins is vitamin C. We all know we need this vitamin. That is why we've always been told by our parents to eat our veggies and gobble up fruits for snacks as well as drink fruit juice instead of soda. Why do we really need vitamin C? The most advertised health benefit of vitamin C is that it helps boost our immune system. Now who wouldn't want that? Here's more good news for smokers, though. Studies have shown that taking vitamin C supplements may help improve blood circulation in smokers who may have problems in that area. The smokers involved in the study were otherwise healthy. Of course, that doesn't mean that vitamin C can take away all the negative effects of smoking. As you can probably surmise from my ...
