It’s pretty likely you have someone elderly in your life, whether it’s a parent or grandparent or even an aunt or uncle. Everyone grows old, and as you grow old it’s increasingly important to do what you can for your health. Your body doesn’t do the things it once did as you get older, so keeping it fit is important.
If you have older folks in your life you may want to help inspire them to stay healthy and keep moving. If they already have issues with mobility they can still use your help and your positive outlook. Here are some things you can do for the elderly people in your life, to help them stay healthy and happy!
Invest In Their Home Care
If your elderly relative or loved one is homebound they need extra love and care. Do they already have someone caring for them in their home? Is there something you can do to help them?
While you might not be able to afford to pay for a home care nurse for them, hopefully, they have some insurance or retirement money that can help with that. You can help them just set up for it, working the internet for them or helping them with paperwork. You can also help them get a good medical alert system for their home, like one that automatically detects falls.
Visit Them More Often
Your elderly family longs for love and attention, so make sure that you give them some. Visit them, spend some time with them, and listen to their stories. They may have a lot of stories to tell, and when they are gone those stories may be gone with them if you don’t remember them.
You might even want to consider recording their stories. You might even want to transcribe them and get them turned into a book that can be shared with other family members. What a great way to help your elderly relatives live on in your family forever.
Make Plans To Get Out And About
Sometimes all your elderly friend or family member wants to do is get out of the house. If they don’t get around well or don’t drive on their own any more they may not get out as much as they used to. This can quickly lead to a big case of cabin fever.
Find out what they want to do, or what they might need to get done out of the house. Maybe they would like to take a small vacation with your somewhere.
Bring Them Healthy Snacks
One more great thing you can do for them to help them with having a healthier new year is to bring them some healthy snacks when you come over to visit. Remember, some older people no longer have their real teeth, so eating certain foods can be a chore.
Bring healthy fruits and vegetables. Ask them what their favorite snacks are and find a way to make the healthiest versions possible.
